Biografie

Drie jaar naar het verschijnen van het debuutalbum ‘Building Steam’ komt Oak met de opvolger ‘Sleep Dream Walk Enter’. Net als bij het debuut heeft Oak in alle rust in een eigen studio op het platteland van warmond er aan gewerkt en het resultaat is ook weer erg bijzonder, sfeervol, boeiend en eigen. Maar Oak is verder gegroeid en heeft met haar vaste begeleiders een uniek bandgeluid neergezet, wat is geevolueerd uit de eerste plaat.
Was de eerste plaat vooral een fascinerende verzameling uitgewerkte schetsen van een duo vol tegenstellingen - het tweede album is meer een geheel, als een prentenkabinet met een aantal aangezichten. Er werden een aantal stukken opgenomen met een vaste groep begeleiders bestaande uit drummer Detlev Timm, contrabassist Dan Simon, trompettist Ruud Peper en gitarist/toetsenist Martijn Vogten. Improvisatie en sfeer was de basis, daarop volgden de sferische soundscapes van Leadzanger Hans Brussee. Olivier Schutte zorgt voor de structuur en Hans maakt het af met zijn stemmige voordracht.

IJle klanken

Naast de bandgerichte stukken staan er een aantal spannende miniatuurtjes op de plaat zoals de instrumentale en semi-klassieke opener Prelude, waar door een opvallende combinatie van viool, harmonium, stylofoon en theremin een betoverende sfeer van ijle klanken wordt gewekt. Een zelfde dromerige sfeer keert terug in de afsluiter Echo-god waar onder meer een vrouwenkoor een betoverend moment zorgt.
Op z’n spannends is Oak in Saints in Cars waar een bezwerende toon overgaat in een open drumpuls.
Oak was zelden zo extreem in zijn minimalisme in het ultra-breekbare Bye Bye My Love en in All I Am komen 70’s en de 21e eeuw samen in een emotioneel relaas.
Een ander extreem vinden we in Endless Sleep waarin beukende percussie, ebowgitaren en knetterende mellotrons een ongekende climax bereiken. En als toetje is er nog de eerder op singel verschenen, zeer geslaagde versie van Bang Bang.

Oak Historie

Oak ontstaat in de zomer van 2002 wanneer Hans Brussee (ex-I$I$, Spasmodique en Immortal) en Olivier Schutte (oprichter Grof Geschut, ex-Deire) besluiten na het uiteenvallen van hun bands een muzikale samenwerking aan te gaan waarin zij op zoek gaan naar rust, ruimte en vernieuwing. Ze besluiten muziek te gaan maken op een spontane manier, gekenmerkt door veel improvisatie en sfeer. In Ollie’s Golden Sound Palace – een voormalig hooizolder op een oude boerderij in Warmond – experimenten ze er lustig op los, daarbij gebruik makend van instrumenten als toongenerators, mellotron, fender rhodes, trompet en mandoline.

Anno 2007 staat Oak niet alleen voor een muzikaal duo maar ook voor een manier van werken, een manier van muziek maken. Waar veel muzikanten nummers schrijven, daarna spelen, daarna arrangeren en daarna opnemen (of in een andere volgorde) probeert Oak al die processen grotendeels spontaan en tegelijkertijd te bewerkstelligen.
De meeste nummers onstaan op een spontane manier in de studio. Soms klein, soms met complete band. Als een nummer klaar is, staat ie ook op band en zo gebeurt het constant dat de opnames die je hoort ook de meest oorspronkelijke versies zijn van de nummers.

En dat zorgt voor een unieke sfeer op deze plaat. ‘Sleep Dream Walk Enter’ staat bol van prille frisheid, ijzige spanning en betoverde sfeerbeelden met een diep melodische kern. Weergaloos op z’n eigen unieke manier.
